The mission of Earth Day is to support, educate and promote environmental movement around the world.
In 1970, U.S. Senator and environmental activist Gaylord Nelson initiated an environmental action called Earth Day, in response to widespread environmental degradation. Since then, this day has been commemorated worldwide as Planet Earth Day, marking the beginning of a modern environmental movement.
Declared by the United Nations as a day dedicated to the fight against environmental threats, Earth Day is commemorated annually on April 22 with the aim of raising awareness and appreciation of the Earth's natural environment.
As part of Earth Day, "Together for Life" part of the ECIM network, Senior 2 program, supported by the REC Regional Center and the Swedish Government, joined the initiative to clean the river Tërkuz, in the Municipal unit Zall Her.
The initiative was attended by civil society activists, students, volunteers who engaged in cleaning the river and the surrounding area, as a way to contribute to improving the situation. Some of the problems that were identified in the area where the cleaning took place were: urban pollution and pollution caused to the area by industrial waste coming as a result of factories located in the area.
In addition to the riverside area, other polluted areas were identified along the road leading to the Tërkuz River. According to the residents of the area, the waste has been there for years and no initiative has been taken by the municipality to improve the situation.
